Computer Science Immersion (CSIS)
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that by 2020 there will be a one million job gap in the field of computer science, with students being unprepared for the skills that American companies are demanding. At Sandlapper Elementary, we strive to prepare each student for success and launch them on a premier path to a future beyond all imagination.
This partnership comes as a growing number of schools around the country are using computer science and games like Minecraft to help students learn everything from math to language skills with the purpose of preparing our 21st Century Scholars with the essential skills required to be successful in the future. All students, Kindergarten through 5th grade, will have an opportunity to develop coding skills as part of the daily curriculum.

Magnet Schools of Merit Awards
MSA’s National Merit Awards program honors the top magnet schools in the United States. These awards recognize magnet schools that demonstrate commitment to high academic standards, curriculum innovation, successful desegregation and diversity efforts, and consistent delivery of high quality educational services to all stakeholders. All schools that apply for merit awards must be current members of Magnet School of America and are required to submit an application that is scored by a panel of educators. Magnet schools that are the highest ranked in the “excellence category” are eligible to receive monetary awards and the chance to be named the nation’s top Elementary, Secondary or New & Emerging Magnet School. One of the schools of excellence will be selected to win $5,000 – which is attached to the Dr. Ronald P. Simpson Distinguished Merit Award, considered the most prestigious merit award. Since 2023, Sandlapper has earned the Merit School of Distinction. In 2022, Sandlapper earned the Magnet School of Excellence Award for being a New and Emerging Magnet School. This award is given to only a select group of magnet schools that have demonstrated the highest level of excellence in all facets of the merit award application. One of our star students also won the 2022 MSA Student Poster Contest.
